미래는 알 수 없습니다. 그럼에도 일련의 흐름에 익숙해진 투자자는 미래를 낙관합니다. 단지 몇번의 신호만으로 마음을 놓아버립니다. 그러나 미래는 그렇게 흘러가지 않습니다. 그것이 바로 투자세계의 특징입니다. 

 

내가 변화시킬 수 있는 것과 변화시킬 수 없는 것을 구분하는 지혜를 가져야 합니다. 내가 주도할 수 없는 것에는 겸손히 위험을 예방할 방법을 마련해 두어야 하고, 내가 변화시킬 수 있는 것은 과감히 주도해야 합니다. 

 

그러나 사람들은 예측불가능한 미래를 섣불리 예측하고 일련의 비슷한 신호에 열광하며 찬사를 보냅니다. 그것은 내가 전혀 통제할 수 없는 것들입니다. 내가 해야 할 일은 통제할 수 없는 미래의 위험에 충분한 대비를 하고, 내가 통제할 수 있는 정보의 양과 질을 높여 합리적인 의사선택을 하는 것입니다.  

 

Clinging to cash equivalents or long term government bonds at present yields is almost certainly a terrible policy if continued for long. Holders of these instruments, of course, have felt increasingly comfortablein fact, almost smug– in following this policy as financial turmoil has mounted. They regard their judgment confirmed when they hear commentators proclaim “cash is king,” even though that wonderful cash is earning close to nothing and will surely find its purchasing power eroded over time. Approval, though, is not the goal of investing. In fact, approval is often counter-productive because it sedates the brain and makes it less receptive to new facts or a re-examination of conclusions formed earlier.
