오은영박사님의 사탕

얼마 전 강연 때의 일입니다. 강연을 끝내고 나오는데 어떤 엄마가 저를 따라 나오더니 눈물을 글썽이면서 제 손을 꼭 잡았습니다. “박사님, 제가 드릴 것이 이것밖에 없어요. 오늘 너무 잘 들었습니다. 너무너무 갈등하고 있었는데 도움이 많이 됐어요” 하면서 제 손에 작은 사탕 하나를 꼭 쥐어 주었어요. 저는 그 엄마를 안아 주면서 “잘 먹겠어요. 그렇지 않아도 목이 칼칼했는데 고마워요” 했습니다.

  저는 사탕을 잘 안 먹어요. 그런데 그날은 차에 타자마자 그 사탕을 먹었습니다. 그 사탕은 근래 먹었던 어떤 음식보다 맛있었어요. 그날 그 사탕 하나로 제가 얼마나 행복감을 느꼈는지 모릅니다. 오늘 하루의 최선 끝에 드물게 오는 이런 행복감, 인간은 이런 경험으로 사는 것 같아요.

It was during a lecture not long ago. As I was leaving the lecture, a mother followed me and held my hand with tears in her eyes. “Doctor, I have only this for you. I heard you very well today. I was in so much conflict, but it helped me a lot” and put a small piece of candy in my hand. I hugged the mother and said, “I will eat well. Even without that, my throat was sore, so thank you.”

  I don't like candy. But that day, I ate the candy as soon as I got in the car. The candy tasted better than anything I had eaten recently. You don't know how happy I felt with that candy that day. This kind of happiness that rarely comes at the end of the day, I think humans live with this kind of experience.
